PHOTO ESSAY: The Path to Walmart

Daily Post editor Bill Hudson and I have been spending some time in Salida this summer – traveling back and forth between Pagosa and Salida. Salida reminds me of a beach town because walking and bicycling are the primary modes of transportation, and because of its location on the beautiful Arkansas River – a playground for residents and tourists alike.

I invested in a cruiser bike so that I could fully enjoy Salida. A few weeks ago, when I first arrived in town, I decided to take a bike ride on a bicycle path that starts at the river and heads southwest through some agricultural pastures. The headwind was impossible, but I vowed to follow the uphill bike path to the end – because I wanted to know where it ended.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the lovely Monarch Spur bike path ended at Salida’s Walmart.

This particular Walmart is on Highway 50, on the western outskirts of town, and replaced a smaller and older Walmart that was also on Highway 50 but directly across the highway from downtown Salida – resulting in heavy traffic congestion and hazardous conditions for the bicyclists and walkers.

It’s my understanding that the Monarch Spur bike path follows an old railroad line. It's just a coincidence that it ends at Walmart.

A rather sad ending, in my mind.

And sadder still, there is not a single bike rack at Walmart.
